The 12000Wh battery is based on a fuel cell for PC Sense Q35, using the DMFC technology (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) for a maximum output of 20W, says the story.


“It gives your PC 8 hours of autonomy.”

“Samsung is also prepping a mini version of the fuel cell which uses around a coffee cup’s worth of fuel, Presario 1700, but can still power a laptop for over 15 hours. Safety standards are still in the works for the new tech, but it looks like Samsung is rearing to go, and they’re planning to launch this dock at the end of 2007.”

We all notice that our battery in our favourite laptop becomes less and less useful as our machine ages. We have compiled a list of 15 tips to help you extend your battery life to its full potential.


1. Keep the battery contacts clean. Remove your battery periodically and clean down the little metal contacts with a dry cloth. This stops the build up of dirt/grime from making your battery work harder.


2. Always read the manual which comes with your laptop. It will have some tips included for ensuring maximum battery capacity/life.

9. Don’t block the Air Vents. Lots of people try to use their new laptop on their knee, or on a bed, etc. This blocks the air vents at the bottom of the machine and causes the laptop to work less efficiently. you can also lead to a breakdown if your laptop overheats, and this might not be cheap to repair.


10. Run Disk Cleanup & Disk Defrag (plus any other system optimisation techniques you use) regularly, as these will keep your laptop operating at peak performance, and lengthen battery life.

12. Keep your battery cool. Do not let the battery get too warm, and do not set it beside a radiator or in direct sunlight, etc. A cool battery performs better.

14. Check your power management settings on your laptop, and ensure it is making full use of these.

What began as a large but limited recall is now sweeping across the industry, and Sony is talking to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission about whether portable DVD players and gaming devices should also be included. However, a commission spokeswoman told the FT that only 47 battery fires have been reported out of billions in service.


So why are HP and Sony not recalling batteries that must have been made at the same time as those which are being recalled, Presario 1800, and which one would expect might be at risk from the same manufacturing defect (of tiny metal shards in the battery electrolyte) as others?


HP said in a statement that "to date HP has received no reports of overheating causing a battery failure in Sony 2.4 or 2.6Ah [amp hour] cells used in some ... HP notebook PCs. Sony has communicated that HP should not be impacted by the Apple or Dell replacement programs. HP believes it will not be impacted by the latest Lenovo or Sony recalls."


And Sony itself? The VAIO division is still deciding whether to join its parent company's recall program. The company itself says that the latest additions are a line in the sand,Presario 700, an end to the fiasco. Unfortunately, we've heard that before - after Dell, then Apple, then Toshiba.


Sony's reputation with millions of laptop owners is in tatters, as customers grapple with the logistics of sending back their potentially dangerous batteries, and the Japanese electronics giant tries the act of metaphorically - and in some cases literally - firefighting.
